Peter S. Mombourquette is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Business and Tourism and Hospitality Management at Mount Saint Vincent University, where he teaches Introduction to Business, Strategic Management, and Entrepreneurship and Small Business. In addition to teaching and research, Peter founded and manages the entrepreneurship Skills Program (ESP), a highly intensive, multi-disciplinary entrepreneurship program aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship propensity among university graduates. Peter has also founded and chairs the highly successful Social Enterprise for a Day (SE4D) conference where students and community leaders learn about social enterprise and start and run social ventures. Over Peter’s time as chair of the department he has worked with his colleagues in creating an engaging environment for students and provided them with an opportunity to give back to society while learning about career opportunities. Peter has worked collaboratively to create a highly successful Learning Passport program for students, an annual Career Week, a job club, a mentorship program with community leaders, an annual Social Enterprise Study Tour, a quarterly newsletter, an annual sustainable business tour, and so forth. Peter was recognized for his efforts at the Mount when he received the Innovative Teaching Award. Peter has also been nominated on two separate occasions by Mount Saint Vincent University for the Atlantic Canadian Leadership Award in teaching.

Peter has completed his DBA from the University of Southern Queensland and previous to that he graduated with an MBA from Saint Mary’s University, a BEd from Saint Francis Xavier University and a BA from Cape Breton University. His research interests include human resource practices in small firms, teaching methodologies, student engagement, and Internet use by small and medium-sized businesses.

Business Curriculum Development

  • Co-Author Proposal for a Major in Strategic Human Resource Management: Co-authored with Dr. Jeff Young the proposal for a major, minor and certificate in Strategic Human Resource Management. Authored responses to MPHEC questions.
  • Co-Author Proposal for MBA program: Co-authored with Dr. Karen Blotnicky proposal for online MBA program. Answered question from Graduate Curriculum Planning Committee and Senate’s Committee of Academic Planning and Programs. Waiting for Senate Approval.
  • Co-Author Bachelor of Business Administration with an International Option: Co-authored with Prof. Michael Whalen a proposal for students to graduate with a specialized designation in International work

  • Co-Developed Flipped Class for Business 1112: Developed in collaboration with Dr. Sandi Findlay a flipped class approach to teaching Business 1112. Piloted the course and now in charge of expanding to other areas.

Projects

  • Chair of Career Week. Once per term (Fall & Winter), we invite and host 50 plus human resource directors and specialists who come to campus and discuss what a career looks like with their particular company, how to apply, career progression and so forth.
  • Chair of an annual Social Enterprise for a Day conference (SE4D), where students on Day 1 learn about social enterprise then on Day 2 they go out into the city and actually run a business.  This is the third year for the annual event.
  • Chair of an Annual Faculty and Student Caritas Day event where 200 students and faculty work with the Sisters of Charity to assist students who need help.
  • Chair of our Learners and Leaders Conference

Organizations and Committees

  • 2012 – present  Chair of the Senate Committee of Teaching and Learning. The committee’s mandate is to ensure excellence in teaching across the university.  The committee is currently creating a Teaching and Learning Plan for the University, holding professional development workshops and working towards policies to ensure an excellent learning environment exists for students on campus.
  • 2013  – present  Chair of the Centre for Women in Business Management Board. Board manages the operations of the Centre.
