On May 21 and 22, 2026 fifteen of our students participated in the Science Atlantic Psychology Student Research Conference at Memorial University in Newfoundland. The students were proudly accompanied by Dr. Angie Birt and Donna Thompson.

Two of our PSYC 3312 students were recognized for their excellent presentations at the conference:

Mehar Sharma won the Science Communication Award for best oral presentation for her work as a research assistant on a research project titled, “Echoes of Trauma: Effects of Childhood and Lifetime Trauma on Vocal Outcomes.”

The Science Communication Award is a prize awarded to the student who is best able to communicate a science topic to their peers. The Award may be split into two prizes (one for an oral and one for a poster presentation) at the discretion of the judging committee. The award consists of a letter of commendation and a cash prize.

Patrick Belgrave won the CIHR-IGH Sex and Gender Based Analysis Award with his poster presentation of his PSYC 3312 research project titled, “Impact of Sex and ASD Symptom Severity on Somatic Complaints in Adolescents”.

The CIHR-IGH SGBA+ award is presented to the student (or students) giving the best research presentation (oral or poster) at the MUN-hosted Science Atlantic Psychology Conference.

Congratulations to Mehar and Patrick, and well done to all of the students who participated in the conference!
