The Mount offers various Undergraduate Bursaries, Scholarships, Prizes and Awards for which all students qualify and/or may apply for. Below includes a list of scholarships, awards and bursaries specific to Tourism students both within and external to the Mount. All students are encouraged to apply for these opportunities.

Canadian Hospitality Foundation (CHF)

Students studying Tourism at the Mount are encouraged to apply for the scholarships included below provided through The Canadian Hospitality Foundation (CHF).

2019 AccorHotels Hospitality Management $1,000 Scholarship
Who Can Apply
A student enrolled in final semester of the Mount Saint Vincent University Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management Degree Program or Tourism and Hospitality Management Diploma Program or recently graduated in 2019 from either program.

Hotel Association of Canada Hospitality Management Scholarship
The Hotel Association of Canada’s Hospitality Management Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of the Canadian lodging industry’s inspirational leaders who have since passed. The recipient of this scholarship is one who best represents the qualities that these leaders brought to the industry, including: demonstration of a strong commitment to the industry and their chosen field; show a “hands on” quality and an entrepreneurial spirit; be active in industry associations and/or events, charity work; and display the ability to lead and inspire a passion for this field in others

John A. Rothschild Bachelor Degree in Hospitality Scholarship
This scholarship is for second year students of a community college currently enrolled in i) the 4 year Bachelor Degree in Hospitality, Hotel & Food, Tourism & Hospitality, ii) third or fourth year students who have finished a diploma program and enrolled in the Bachelor Degree in Hospitality, Hotel & Food, Tourism & Hospitality (2+2), and iii) third or fourth year University students currently enrolled in the Bachelor Degree in Hospitality, Hotel & Food, Tourism & Hospitality.

Congratulations to Mount tourism students Sarah O’Connor and Evangeline Sing who win second place with their hotel concept called Vino Viña at the first national contest this week called #hotelNEXT.

Aspiring hotel developers from universities across Canada competed in the competition by pitching hotel concepts to a panel of Canadian investors and owners in front of a live audience at the annual Canadian Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC). May 18 [newswire]

International Student of the Year

International Student Award
Awarded to a Business Administration or Tourism and Hospitality Management student at the Mount who exhibits outstanding merit in both academic achievement and professional development. This student has had a visible impact on improving the quality of the international student experience at Mount Saint Vincent University. Students are nominated by faculty members who have noticed their achievements and potential for future success.

International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association Foundation (IGLTA)

Education
The IGLTA Foundation understands that advancing the safety and well being of LGBT travelers requires providing opportunities to succeed for the next generation of travel professionals committed to serving them and for LGBT-welcoming travel professionals in destinations lacking government or business support for LGBT tourism—especially in nations with governments that are hostile to the LGBT community.

Financial Assistance for Professional Development

Each year, the IGLTA Foundation provides financial support for travel and accommodations for the IGLTA Annual Global Convention for up to four students as well as up to four small-business leaders who have a documented commitment to serving LGBT travelers,particularly in destinations lacking LGBT tourism support and/or destinations having anti-gay governments. Participation in the Annual Global Convention provides these students and small-business leaders with essential information& training, contacts with industry leaders, and professional networking opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH)

Did you know… NEWH has awarded over $6,000,000.00+ in scholarships to over 2,350 students to date!

About NEWH Scholarships – An objective of the NEWH By-laws is to promote scholarship, education and interest within the Hospitality Industry. NEWH, Inc. and its chapters fundraise to provide scholarships to students pursuing a career within Hospitality related fields (Interior Design, Hospitality Management, Culinary, Architecture, Senior Living, etc.).

NEWH Women Leaders $5,000 scholarship, sponsored by Boutique Design Group: Opens in spring, applications due late summer and awarded in November. Open to female hospitality management students. Awarded at Boutique Design Power Players: Women Leaders in Hospitality Breakfast and Panel session in New York City in November (during BDNY). Scholarship recipient must be able to attend the awards event with paid airfare/lodging provided. Open!

NEWH Leadership $10,000 scholarship: Opens in spring (even years), applications due late summer. Winner awarded at the NEWH Leadership Conference in January/February the following year (location changes). Open to hospitality management students. Scholarship recipient must be able to attend the awards event with paid airfare/lodging/conference pass provided. Opening Spring 2021.

Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council (NSTHRC)

The Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council  (NSTHRC) is proud to support initiatives that encourage individuals to pursue and enhance their professional careers within the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry. The NSTHRC offers three Tourism Scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing post secondary education in tourism. The Council also offers a scholarship for Tourism Professionals working in the Industry who are interested in pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their career.

Walter H. Johnson Jr. Tourism Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually. There are two award categories: GOLD – $1,250.00 and SILVER – $750.00. Both awards are renewable for one additional year, for $750.00 and $250.00 respectively. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.

Hotel Association of Nova Scotia Culinary Scholarship 
With the tremendous growth in the Tourism Sector, cooking professionals are in great demand. To assist in the growth of culinary talent in Nova Scotia, the Hotel Association of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council are offering a Scholarship for high school graduates interested in pursuing post secondary education within the culinary trade. This Scholarship is presented annually in the amount of $1000 and is renewable for one additional year in the amount of $500. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.

Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarships
To support the investment in human resource development in the Tourism Industry, NSTHRC is proud to award two scholarships for Tourism professionals seeking to upgrade their skills in their designated field.

Pacrim Hospitality Services

Pacrim Hospitality Services has been providing financial support to the Mount’s Tourism program since 2002 when the Pacrim Invitational Golf Tournament was established. In 2015, a new initiative, the TEAM (provide the title – Tourism Education Alliance … was established). (Funds raised – include the link below) from these events provide direct support to students through scholarships, awards, and a program enhancement fund that supports scholarly activities and funding for program needs. Specific funds, scholarships, and awards made available to the program include:

The Pacrim Enhancement Fund provides the department with monies used to enhance scholarly activities and provide funding for program needs.

Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. Endowed Scholarships
Established by Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. to recognize Mount Saint Vincent University’s commitment to academic excellence and the tourism profession. Awarded annually to full-time students entering the bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management program: one scholarship awarded to a student entering directly from high school and one scholarship to a student from the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), entering directly upon the completion of the NSCC’s Tourism and Hospitality Management diploma.

Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. Endowed Award For Excellence In Tourism and Hospitality Management
Established by Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. This award recognizes academic excellence and is presented to a student graduating from the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management degree program with the highest aggregate in each of the Spring and Fall Convocations.

Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. Endowed Leadership Award
Established by Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. This award recognizes a senior student who has completed a minimum of 15 units and who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities in her/his life as a Mount student and the potential to contribute to the profession in the future. Students must submit a resume and covering letter outlining their demonstrated leadership abilities within the University community (in sports, student government, student societies) or in volunteer activities outside of the university. Please submit your application to Colleen Blacker at colleen.blacker@msvu.ca.

Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. Endowed Travel Award For The Tourism And Hospitality Management Degree
Established by Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. This award provides financial assistance to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management degree who took up residence outside of Halifax Regional Municipality to complete their co-operative education work term. Students must complete the travel Award application (provided through the Co-op Office) and submit an essay on the benefits of going away for their co-operative work term and outline what they have learned and gained from this experience.

7shifts Scholarship

The 7shifts Scholarship program empowers the next generation of restaurant workers to get the education they need to propel the industry forward. The culinary scholarship provides a bursary for post-secondary tuition to students seeking an education in culinary-related programs in North America.

Annual scholarships available to hospitality management students!

The scholarship details and requirements are as follows:

  • $1,000 scholarship for a hospitality management student
  • $1,000 scholarship for culinary student
  • Must be a full-time student of Mount Saint Vincent University (any year)
  • Must submit their resume, degree details (diploma, certificate, etc) , and a 1-3 minute video discussing their interest in the restaurant and hospitality industry

SKAL

SKAL Award. This award is given to a student who exhibits the SKAL embodiment of networking and friendship in tourism. This is awarded annually in March at the SKAL event which takes place on campus.

With a vision to be a trusted voice in travel and tourism, Skål is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers, and executives meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. Through leadership, professionalism and friendship, members of Skål work together to maximize networking opportunities and support a responsible tourism industry.

Tourism Cares Academic Scholarships Undergraduate Awards for Tuition.

This general application provides access to up to 20 scholarships.

  • full or part time student enrolled in a travel, tourism or hospitality related program of study pursing an associate, bachelors or masters degree.
