The public relations work experience program allows you to integrate academic studies with full-time paid career-related experience in an organizational setting: corporate, non-profit or government. The program also gives you an opportunity to explore and determine career goals.

You will complete two work experience terms (PBRL 1199 and PBRL 2299).

Each work experience term must be:

  • related to public relations
  • paid
  • full-time (at least 35 hours per week)
  • at least 13 weeks

Typical sequencing for a public relations work experience student

You meet the requirements for the public relations work experience option, rather than the co-operative education option, if you fall under one of the following criteria:

  • you are a part-time student
  • you are completing the degree through distance learning
  • you have 7.5 units or more of transfer credits

Work Experience Term Requirements

In order for you to successfully complete a work experience term, you must:

  • have your position approved as an eligible work experience term by the Co-op Office
  • complete the work term position (at least 13 weeks)
  • complete a final work term report (see guidelines below)

Potential Jobs

Work experience students are required to find their own work term. Your position must be approved by the Co-op Office before you can begin working. Below are some examples of positions that could be approved for a public relations work experience student:

  • Public Relations Assistant
  • Marketing Coordinator
  • Communications Specialist
  • Media Relations Assistant
  • Public Affairs Officer
  • Special Events Coordinator

The tourism & hospitality management work experience program allows you to integrate academic studies with related work experience and gives you an opportunity to determine career goals. Each work experience term must be at least 455 hours. You will also have an opportunity to build on previous experience while maintaining flexibility in your academic scheduling.

Each work experience term:

  • can be paid or unpaid
  • can have the hours accumulated by more than one position and/or employer
  • must be related to the tourism & hospitality industry

Sequencing & Eligibility

You will complete one work experience term (THMT 2299) if you are in the Diploma in Tourism & Hospitality Management program and two work terms (THMT 2299 and THMT 3399) if you are in the Bachelor of Tourism & Hospitality Management (Work Experience Route) program.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management (Work Experience Route) program will complete work term 1 in the spring/summer semester (May – August) after completing 9-11 units of academic study. They will complete work term 2 in the spring/summer semester (May – August) after completing 14-16 units of academic study.

Students enrolled in the Diploma of Tourism and Hospitality Management will complete one work term in the spring/summer semester (May – August) after completing 5-6 units of academic study.

You meet the requirements for the work experience route if you fall under one of the following criteria (for Bachelor degree students):

  • you are a part-time student
  • you are completing the degree through distance learning
  • you have 7.5 units or more of transfer credits
  • you are a full-time student with at least two years of full-time industry experience prior to beginning your degree

Note: All Diploma students must complete the work experience route.

Work Experience Route Requirements

In order for you to successfully complete your work experience term, you must provide the following information to the Co-op Office:

  • a job description for the position(s) you have secured, related to tourism & hospitality
  • a final work experience report
  • a confirmation of 455 hours on company letterhead or an email from your supervisor
