Research Interests

Dr. Whitfield is passionate about international nutrition, with interests in identifying and combating micronutrient deficiencies during ‘the first thousand days’ window, from conception through 2 years. Dr. Whitfield’s doctoral research focused on the use of thiamin-fortified fish sauce to address maternal thiamin deficiency and infantile beriberi in rural Cambodia, an area where thiamin-related infant mortality remains a major public health issue. At the Mount, Dr. Whitfield plans to continue exploring public health interventions to combat nutrition deficiencies in resource-poor settings.
