Borrowing library materials

A current MSVU identification card is required to borrow materials from the library. A network account is required to access article databases from off-campus. To activate your ID card as a library card, simply visit the Circulation Desk and have staff register you in the Novanet database. Your ID card must be updated before the end of September each year.

Books are loaned to faculty on a term basis.

Due dates by term:        Summer      September 30
                                           Fall                January 31
                                           Spring           May 31

Please note that individual term reminders regarding borrowed MSVU items that are due at the end of term are not sent out. In addition, since it is now possible to renew items online, library staff will not be doing renewals on faculty's behalf. If you require instruction on how to complete renewals online, please contact the library. Books borrowed from MSVU and other Novanet libraries may be renewed up to three times.

Fines are 25¢ per day per item to a maximum of $20.00 per item. Materials may be borrowed, renewed and returned at any Novanet Library. Any borrowed item may be recalled after 10 days. Overdue 'recall fines' are $1.00 per day per item to a maximum of $20.00 per item.

Fair Dealing & Copyright Information

What is Fair Dealing?

Fair Dealing is the right, within limits, to reproduce a substantial amount of a copyrighted work without permission from, or payment to, the copyright owner. Its purpose is to facilitate creativity and free expression by ensuring reasonable access to existing knowledge while at the same time protecting the interests of copyright owners.
More information: Canadian Association of University Teachers "Fair Dealing" (No. 3) (Intellectual Property Advisory, Dec 2008).

What is Access Copyright?

The Access Copyright licence gives educators and students advance permission to copy from millions of copyright protected newspapers, magazines, journals and books from around the world, complementing what is allowed under fair dealing, educational exceptions under the Copyright Act, and through the public domain. The full text of the Access Copyright agreement is available on Reserve in ENV 1030. Copies of the guide have also been distributed to department Chairs and Deans.
More information: Access Copyright Regulations for Universities & Colleges

Please note: The Copyright Act is somewhat vague as to what exactly constitutes fair dealing. As a result the task of giving meaning to fair dealing falls to the courts and to the users of copyrighted material. There are many "grey" areas to be considered. Please consult the following links for more information:

    * Mount Library guidelines to copyright and fair dealing

    * Copyright and fair dealing information from University of Prince Edward Island

    * Access Copyright FAQ from the Dalhousie Copyright Office.
