Research Interests

Dr. Mirza’s research focuses on language and reading development, as well as learning difficulties among English language learners. Specifically, she examines how children learn to read in different languages with various orthographies. Her work also investigates affective reading interventions that assist in addressing early learning and reading challenges. Additionally, she manages a program outside Canada that trains elementary teachers in the “Principles of Teaching Literacy in an ESL context.” Her ongoing research projects include a study titled “The Effect of Coaching vs. Training among Elementary-level Teachers in the Practice of Early Literacy Instruction in Elementary Classrooms.” Most recently, she began working on a research project that examines the efficacy of an integrated and explicit vocabulary instructional program in supporting early literacy learning, enhanced by teacher training, their responses, and classroom practices.
