Research Assistant in Mathematics
Applications are open for one or two part-time positions as a research assistant in mathematics under the supervision of Dr. Svenja Huntemann. Applications will be reviewed starting on September 15th and the competition remains open until the position is filled.
Project
The project is to take a game chosen by the research assistant (with support from the supervisor) and modifying it, as needed, until the rules fall under the “combinatorial games” umbrella, i.e. there are no hidden or random elements. We will then study this variant to determine how difficult it is, with the goal being to get information about the original game. This is an approach taken successfully with several games in recent years, such as Hanabi, SET, or Kingdomino.
Position details
The position(s) is for up to 400 hours in total, to be split between the positions and the fall and winter semesters. Hourly pay will be $17-$19 depending on experience. It is open to all undergraduate students at MSVU, not just mathematics students. Although having completed first- and second-year math courses would be an asset, only logical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as an interest in board or card games, are required.
Priority for this position will be given to an indigenous student, then an international and/or female-identifying student.
How to apply
To apply, email svenja.huntemann@msvu.ca with a cover letter addressing (1) your experience in mathematics, logical thinking, and problem solving, (2) which game(s) you may want to consider and why, (3) how many hours you could work on average per week, and (4) whether or not you fall into one of the priority hiring categories. Also include either a resume or a curriculum vitae.
