Background

Dr. Brown graduated from University of New Brunswick with a first class honours degree in Sociology, and then went to the University of Minnesota for her PhD in Sociology. She was very pleased to obtain a position back in Canada at MSVU – a university notable in many respects, including its leadership in promoting the education of women.

Teaching

Dr. Brown teaches a number of different undergraduate courses, supervises honours students,  and occasionally serves on graduate thesis committees at sister universities. Most recently she has taught Theory, Community and Change, Politics and Society, and Canadian Social Policy.

Research

Dr. Brown has a longstanding interest in organizational democracy, co-operatives, and community development, and has written and presented extensively in these areas. In recent years she has worked in the area of social accounting and reporting and conducted research in that field as part of the Southern Ontario Research Node on the Social Economy.  In 2003 the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council awarded the Distinguished Co-operator Award to Dr. Brown, and in 2009 the Canadian Association of Co-operative Studies recognized her contributions to co-operative research by presenting her with their Merit Award.

As of August 31, 2011, Dr. Brown completes six years as the Director of the Social Economy and Sustainability Research Network, a collaborative partnership of over 80 community and university based individuals and organizations that has come together to study the Social Economy of Atlantic Canada. This Network, funded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), is winding up as of 2011; more information may be found on their website and the linked Social Economy Space site.

Dr. Brown is currently on the management board of the SSHRC-funded "Measuring the Co-operative Difference" Research Network, and is the co-lead (with a community partner) of the Atlantic Cluster in that Network.

Together with academic and community collaborators, Dr. Brown continues her research on social and sustainability accounting, reporting and planning.
