What To Do if You’re Concerned About a Student

Members of the Mount community are encouraged to contact a member of Counselling Services if you’re concerned about a student who is displaying signs of distress or concern. Through informal consultation, our team may be able to suggest possible intervention strategies.

Review our Guide to Responding to Students in Distress (link opens in a new tab).

Consult with a Counsellor

  • Book a 30-minute meeting with the Counselling Services Manager or another counsellor to discuss your concern about a student by emailing counselling@msvu.ca, calling 902 457 6567, or visiting the Student Services desk at EMF 108.
  • They will give you resources to help you support the student.
  • Attend Mental Health First Aid or Mental Health 101 training, run regularly through Counselling Services.

Help a Student Book a Same-Day 30-minute Appointment

  • Call 902 457 6567 with the student’s permission to ask if there’s an available same-day appointment that day. If yes, hand the phone to the student to confirm the appointment.
  • Email counselling@msvu.ca and cc the student to ask if there’s an available same-day appointment that day. The front desk staff will reply to the student directly to arrange the appointment.
  • Accompany the student to the Student Services desk at EMF 108 (lower level of the library). The front desk staff will arrange a same-day appointment with the student if one is available.
  • Visit the page on same-day 30-minute appointments for more information.

Counselling Services is not an emergency clinic.

All emergencies (e.g., serious threats of violence, actively suicidal individuals) should be directed to a hospital emergency department or to call 911.
