General Troubleshooting tips:

  • MSVU WiFi and Eduroam use your email address as your account, just like myMount. However, like a lab PC, MSVU WiFi can also use just your account name, as an example Jan.Smith2@msvu.ca or jsmith2 will work.
  • If you are able to login to myMount, and/or a lab PC, you should be able to login to MSVU WiFi.
  • If you have forgotten your password or wish to change your password, go to the MSVU web page, click on myMount/Email at the top of the page, then on the left click on Forgot/Change my password. The big green buttons will let you change your password or recover from a forgotten password.
  • After a password change, you should be able to immediately log in to myMount, MSVU WiFi, or a lab PC.
  • Recovering using the self-service password tool can take up to ½ hour to sync the change back to all university systems, this includes MSVU WiFi, myMount, and logging into a lab PC.
  • If your login and wireless are both working correctly, and you change your MSVU account password, please remember that you need to use the new password for your MSVU WiFi connection on your devices. If you had previously chosen to remember the MSVU WiFi network on your device and especially if have “automatically reconnect” selected, you need to update this saved connection with your new password. Otherwise the device will continue to attempt to connect to the MSVU WiFi network with the old password and may temporarily lock your account with too many bad login attempts.
  • For new students, if you have not logged into myMount before, please do so before trying to connect to MSVU WiFi. The first time that you login, you will be asked to change your password and set up self service password reset; this should be completed before attempting to connect to the MSVU WiFi network.
  • Applicant accounts do not actually have email (they have an email address placeholder), and cannot log into a lab PC nor access MSVU WiFi until converted into a regular student account.

Android/Chromebook Devices

Different devices may display the field name or order of settings differently.

For connecting to MSVU WiFi and Eduroam the typical settings will be similar to:

EAP method: PEAP

Identity: enter your email address

Password: enter your password that you use for myMount or info commons/lab PC login

Server CA certificate or CA Certificate: choose Default or Do not check or Do nor Validate

Under EAP Phase 2 Authentication or Advanced, under Phase 2 authentication: chose MSCHAPV2

Optional setting: turn on Auto reconnect

If the device fails to connect, double check that the correct username (email address) and password is typed in. Disconnect/Forget the Mount WiFi network, turn off Wi-Fi and/or restart the device and re-enter the settings being extra careful with the password. If you have the ability to click on the “eye” beside the password, you may be able to peek or temporarily have the password displayed so that you can verify it is typed in correctly.

Some Android devices (in particular Google Pixel phones) have started to require an additional layer of security for connecting to enterprise Wi-Fi systems. If you still cannot connect after forgetting the MSVU WiFi network, restarting Wi-Fi, and rechecking your settings, you may need to configure these additional entries to get your device to connect.

EAP method: PEAP

Identity: Your MSVU Email

Anonymous Identity: Leave Blank or enter anything@msvu.ca, as an example you can enter 123@msvu.ca

Certificate: Use system certificates

Online certificate: Do not validate or Request status

Domain: clearpass.msvu.ca

Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2

If you choose an incorrect setting and/or your device does not connect, on Chromebooks it is recommended to click forget MSVU WiFi, turn your Wi-Fi off and then back on or restart the device, and then try to set up the connection again.

We have found that some Chromebooks do not let you update/change Wi-Fi settings once you have set them once – it only looks like it you change the setting but the device seems to not accept it and will continue to fail to connect. Forgetting the connection and setting it up again steps seems to work:

Forget the MSVU WiFi network

Turn off Wi-Fi, turn it back on – if you do not see an easy way to do so, restart the Chromebook. Select the MSVU WiFi network, carefully enter the connection settings again.

These errors normally appear when the user is entering an incorrect username or password.

If you still cannot login, try logging onto a MSVU PC or into myMount using your email address and MSVU password to verify your credentials area valid and you have the ability to login to other systems.

This error seems to be more persistent than the other connection issues mentioned above. If you have already tried to connect to the Mount WiFi before, forget the network and perform a hardware reset to reset the hardware settings.
