Located on the Bedford Highway, the Mount Fitness Centre offers some of Halifax’s most fun and affordable fitness, wellness and recreation options including Aikido, Shotokai Karate, Dance, Pickleball and more! We also have special events, group fitness classes and Campus Rec activities specific for MSVU students.

International Dance Day

What the world needs now…is DANCE! Bring joy and connection back into your life during this eclectic dance fitness class that teaches, inspires, and allows people of all ages and abilities to have fun!

– Melissa leads a dance fitness party with Latin, Broadway, Jive/Swing and more, then a ballet barre workout to challenge your core and balance.
– Special guest Soumya Jain teaches a happy, energetic Bollywood routine!

Mental Health Week: May 4-10, 2026


During the week of May 4-10, we invite you to explore one of the many opportunities The Mount Fitness Centre provides for improving your mental health through physical activity.

Free events and activities include:

– A FREE 7-day pass to the MFC for all non-members, 18+ years of age. Includes access to our conditioning centre, group fitness classes drop-in Pickleball and open gym time.
– May 4: Free trial of DanceFit from 7:10-8:00 p.m.
– May 5: Drop-in Pickleball from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
– May 6: Free trial of Aikido from 7:30-9:00 p.m.
– May 7: Intro to Meditation from 1:10-1:55 p.m.
– May 8: Free trial of Aikido from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Mount Fitness Centre Aikido Club

Aikido Club


In partnership with Daikouwan/Great Harbour Aikikai, we offer this Aikido program for ages 18 years and older, of all skill levels.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art and a form of practical non-violence. It is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack, rather than opposing it head-on. Aikido requires very little physical strength. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Participate in any or all of the following classes.


Weekly class options:
– Mondays, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
– Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
– Fridays*, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

No classes on the following dates in 2025-26:
– October 13, December 22-January 2, February 16, April 3, 6, May 18, July 1 and August 3.
– *Friday classes end in June for the summer.

– 12 month term: September 8, 2025-September 2, 2026
– Fall term: September 8-Decemeber 19, 2025
– Winter term: January 5-May 1, 2026

Bollywood Dance

Bollywood is all about drama. There’s no specific technique but only ONE rule – you must have fun! This class will start with a warm-up, followed by learning a routine to a Bollywood song, and then performing the dance. Everyone is welcome in this all levels class!

DanceFit


This DanceFit program is 50-minutes of fun and fitness! And most of all, burning off stress with energetic music, and movements that are designed for everyone. From Disco, to Latin, to musical theatre and much more, your workout can turn into a trip around the world and this welcoming environment means that no-one is left behind!

Intro to Meditation

Did you know that anyone can learn to meditate? It’s not all about silencing your thoughts or sitting quietly for hours. Meditation has been scientifically shown to help concentration, relieve stress and much more. In this hybrid session we’ll learn the basics and practice focusing our attention and developing tools that build inner calm.

Pilates

Pilates is for everyone! This mat class will focus on building muscle tone and improving posture, but with an emphasis on core/back strengthening it’s excellent for both fitness and rehabilitation.

We keep class sizes low to ensure personalized attention and allow all participants to have access to specialized equipment such as Pilates circles, mini stability balls and more. During this session you will feel the burn and develop a stronger body-mind connection.

Mount Fitness Centre Shotokai Karate Club

Karate Club

This term is for returning participants only.

In partnership with the Shotokai Karate Club, this well-established club has been providing karate programming at the Mount for over 30 years.

Shotokai Karate is a non-competitive martial art that empowers people to improve themselves through practicing Karate-do. The majority of our practice focuses on distance, timing and striving for personal development. *For ages 15 years and older of all skill levels.

Pickleball 101 Workshops

Are you looking to give North America’s fastest growing sport a try, but aren’t ready to commit to a full class? Are you hungry for an appetizer, but not the full meal? Then this two-hour workshop is for you! In this session, you will learn the basic shots, tactics and rules of the game. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be playing this game and learning what all the fuss is about. Paddles and balls are provided.

Pickleball Fundamentals

Are you looking for a fun way to stay active and connect with friends? Look no further than pickleball – the fastest-growing sport in North America! Pickleball is a paddle sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s easy to learn and perfect for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or brand new to sports, pickleball is a fantastic way to get moving and have fun.

In this foundational course, you’ll learn everything you need to start playing with confidence. We will cover essential skills such as serving, volleying, and dinking, along with the rules of the game, scoring, and basic strategies. By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to enjoy this exciting and social sport! Paddles and balls are provided.

Intermediate Pickleball

Are you a Pickleball player who knows the basic shots, elementary tactics and rules of game, but wants to learn more about this great sport and play at a higher level? Then our Intermediate Pickleball course is for you!
