About the Art Gallery

MSVU Art Gallery respectfully acknowledges that the Gallery and Mount Saint Vincent University are situated on Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq.

Opened in 1971, MSVU Art Gallery functions as a resource to Mount Saint Vincent University, communities served by the University, artists and art publics everywhere.

Through its focus on contemporary art and professional mentoring, the Art Gallery has been a catalyst to many art careers. Its exhibitions explore various forms of cultural production, highlighting the achievements of Nova Scotian artists and themes relevant to academic programs offered by the University.

The program centres on the production of Canadian artists in all career phases. The emphasis on women as cultural subjects and producers reflects the University’s educational mission. MSVU Art Gallery recognizes socially engaged practices as models of aesthetic distinction and political imagination, and the means toward deeper community engagement. Consistent with the principle that exhibition spaces are civic spaces, the gallery is committed to normalizing accessible practices throughout its public programs.

MSVU Art Gallery promotes critical access to its exhibitions through publications, lectures and educational programs. It also manages the University art collection, on view throughout the campus. The Art Gallery is supported by Mount Saint Vincent University. Core funding from the Canada Council for the Arts is gratefully acknowledged.
