Academic Standing

The Dean's Office assesses all students' academic standing each year at the end of May. Academic standing is based on your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which is the average grades earned in all of your courses. Good academic standing is a CGPA of 1.7 or above. Students with a CGPA between 1.0 - 1.699 (inclusive) who have attempted at least 3.0 units will be placed on academic probation until the next assessment period. Students who have achieved CGPA less than 1.0 who have attempted at least 3.0 units will be dismissed for a 12-month period.

Important Terms and Policies:

Academic Alert

Academic Alert is an early warning that a student may be in academic jeopardy if their grades do not improve. Students who achieve a Term GPA (TGPA) below 1.7 in their Fall semester will receive an Academic Alert letter in January. Students will be asked to meet with their Academic Advisor. Academic Alert is not an academic standing and will not be recorded on the student's record.

Academic Probation (AP)

If a student achieves a cumulative GPA between 1.0 and 1.699 who have attempted at least 3.0 units from September to April, they will be put on Academic Probation. While on AP, students:

  • Are required to meet with a Student Academic Advisor to have their course registration approved Are permitted to take a maximum of 4 courses per semester
  • May continue to take courses and will normally be restricted to registering in a maximum of 4.0 units per academic year
  • Are required to register in and pass UNIV 0001 (the Student Success Course)

Students who achieve  a CGPA of 1.7 or higher by the end of the following winter term will be returned to "good academic standing." Students on academic probation who do not achieve a CGPA of 1.7 by the end of the following winter term will be academically suspended for a 12-month period.

  • Students whose CGPA is less than 1.0 and who have attempted at least 3.0 units will be academically suspended for a 12-month period
