Internal funding opportunities are adjudicated by the Committee on Research and Publications (CRP), a standing committee of Senate with the purpose of fostering research among MSVU faculty.

The President’s Award for Research Excellence, given to a faculty member on an annual basis, recognizes the individual’s contribution to the research community and to the research climate at Mount Saint Vincent University. The award also serves as a showcase to the high level of scholarly research at Mount Saint Vincent University.

In keeping with our Research Strategic Plan, the purpose for the Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP) Training grant is to provide funds to full-time ongoing faculty who collaborate or are interested in collaborating with Indigenous Peoples, or in interacting with Indigenous data or information in a way that is respectful of the First Nations ownership, control, access, and possession of First Nations data. Specifically, this grant covers the cost ($500) of The Fundamentals of OCAP® online course exploring First Nations self-determination, self-governance, and collective rights to data sovereignty through the framework of The First Nations Principles of OCAP®.

Standard internal grants provide seed money to faculty research projects with potential for future external grant application to Canadian Tri-Council agencies or other leading funders. Standard grants may also be used as bridge funding between grants, to hire students for smaller projects, to purchase small, necessary research equipment or to fund pilot projects.

Researchers can request funds (up to $1,500.00) to defray the final costs of publishing a peer-reviewed work such as a paper, book, or report. Such costs can include editing or indexing. Researchers can request funds for technical assistance with peer-reviewed papers, books or reports or costs associated with open access publishing. In addition, costs associated with research communication more broadly, including non-print scholarly work, such as media production, an exhibit or a performance may also be applied. Other knowledge mobilization activities, or products, that inform a target audience or engage partners (from within and/or beyond academia) to inform research, public debate, policy or practice are also eligible.

The Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) program is administered jointly by Canada’s three research granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The CN Student Research Internship Fund provides Student Research Internships for graduate and undergraduate students, providing experiential learning opportunities to students for careers in the private, public or not-for-profits sectors. To adhere closely to the original intent of the agreement between CN and Mount Saint Vincent, first preference will be given to student female researchers, and/or those doing research in areas related to women. Paid research internships for our Mount students will not only provide relevant, paid, work experience but will also fulfill goals of the MSVU Research Strategic Plan (2023-2028).

The Early Career Research Award, given to an early-career full-time faculty member, recognizes the individual’s commitment and achievement as a contributor to the research community and to the research climate at Mount Saint Vincent University. This award serves to reward excellence and achievement in research, not only recognizing the achievements of a given early career faculty member, but also emphasizing the important role of research in university life. A certificate will be awarded in the Fall, and the recipient’s faculty photo and research profile will be displayed on the Research Office website. The award will stand as a testament to the significant contribution of research to the University.

SSHRC Explore

SSHRC Explore Grant (up to $5,000) funds small scale research projects to enable researchers to hire students at any level to participate in their research, thereby contributing to their professional development. This initiative aims to encourage innovation, training, and mentoring initiatives for students under the supervision of faculty research which falls under SSHRC’s mandate.

SSHRC Exchange

SSHRC Exchange Grants (up to $5,000) support small-scale knowledge exchange or mobilization activities that fall under SSHRC’s mandate. In keeping with our Research Strategic Plan, the Research and Ethics Services Office (RESO) is launching this one-time special call “EDIA in Research Grant” with the aim to support capacity to integrate equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) in research practice at MSVU. This grant provides up to $2,500 for Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) projects, and up to $5,000 for research projects, over 1 year.

Applicants whose proposal for a salary-based grant is approved will have their gross salary reduced by an amount corresponding to the total of the grant. For research leave awardees, the grant will be paid in quarterly lump-sum installments. For non-leave awardees, grant payment will be included with the regular monthly salary payment; the gross monthly amount of grant and salary (before deductions) may not exceed the normal gross monthly
salary.
