Mount Saint Vincent University celebrated 644 graduates from 31 countries during its spring convocation ceremonies on May 15 and 16, 2025.
Students crossed the stage from arts, science, education, and professional programs to accept a range of 40 degrees, diplomas and certificates and join a global network of alumni more than 40,000 strong.
Honorary degree recipient
During the spring 2025 convocation, MSVU bestowed the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, on Dr. Stephanie Scott.
In introducing Dr. Scott to the graduating class, Dr. Mary Rita Holland, Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies at MSVU, said: “Dr. Scott is a compassionate doctor, visionary leader and innovator, thoughtful teacher, difference maker, and inspiration to future generations. Her work has already left a mark on the lives of countless patients, on the Nova Scotia health care system, and on the field of gynecologic oncology in the Atlantic region and beyond. And we have no doubt that there are still many accomplishments to come.”
In her address to graduates, Dr. Scott spoke of her journey and her journey and what she’s learned along the way. “Throughout my career, I’ve come to understand that advancing women’s health and education isn’t just about medicine or public policy—it’s about human rights,” she said. “It’s about the radical idea that every woman and girl, no matter her background, has the right to live a full, informed, and healthy life. That her body is her own. That her voice is valued. That her story is worthy of attention and action.”
“When women rise, entire communities rise with them,” said Dr. Scott.
She called on graduates to use the gift of education to pursue their passions and improve the lives of others.
“What you choose to fight for will define not just your path, but the kind of society you help design. As you step into the world, do not just find your place in it – shape it, challenge it, and always raise your voice for what you believe is right, because the future belongs to those brave enough to build it. Look for the gaps and demand better. Never underestimate the impact you have to inspire others and set off a chain reaction around you. Let us lift each other while we climb. Your voice is already powerful. Your questions are worth asking. Your leadership is needed – not someday, but right now.”
