Program launching September 2016
With
a long history of making education accessible, the Mount is furthering its distance
education offerings with the launch of an entirely online option for students
interested in pursuing a Master of Education (MEd) degree in Elementary and Middle School Education.
Set to launch in September 2016, the Mount program will be the first entirely
online offering by a Nova Scotia university of this type of MEd
(online Masters of Education programs have
previously been offered by the Mount in literacy education and lifelong
learning, then “adult learning”). The program will be part-time and (based
on students taking one course per semester) will take a little over two years
to complete.

“The Mount’s graduate programs in Education are among the most highly regarded in the region, and now we’re able to offer that benefit to even more students further afield."
-- Dr. Robert Bérard, Professor and Director of Graduate Education, Faculty of Education
“The MEd in Elementary and Middle School Education is a well-established
program at the Mount that now students will have the benefit of accessing from
wherever they may be,” said
Dr.
Robert Bérard, Professor
and Director of Graduate Education within the Faculty of Education. “The
Mount’s graduate programs in Education are among the most highly regarded in
the region, and now we’re able to offer that benefit to even m
ore students
further afield. As well, this format offers a flexible option for students who
are fitting graduate studies into already busy lives.”
The MEd in Elementary and Middle School Education seeks to help educators or
administrators in education become more skilled and creative at their craft by exploring
the relationship between curriculum and teaching. The program also includes
study of issues and trends in education today.
Program structure and schedule
The new online program will be delivered based on a cohort model, in other
words, students will start as a group and generally move through the program
together. Each cohort will be limited to 15 students.
“Students will take two required courses to start and then we’ll explore
subject areas that are of particular interest to each cohort, for example science,
social studies, mathematics, or language arts,” explained Dr. Bérard. “In other words, what happens after the
first two terms will be dictated by the students in the cohort, which is a
flexibility that we’re pleased to be able to provide and of great benefit to our
students.” (

The program will be administered by Dr. Bérard and taught by the many experienced faculty
within the Mount’s Faculty of Education. Among them are some of the top
researchers in their fields, including such areas as literacy, math
instruction, teaching English as a second language, ADHD, learning
disabilities, inclusive education and much more. (
