Mount Saint Vincent University is proud to share that Theresa Meuse, the university’s Special Advisor on Indigenous Affairs and a celebrated Mi’kmaw author and educator, will launch her latest children’s book, The Friendship Centre, this July.
The book launch will take place on Tuesday, July 16, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre located at 2021 Brunswick Street in Halifax. All are welcome to attend.
The Friendship Centre introduces young readers to urban Indigenous life through the eyes of a young boy named Matthew. Visiting his uncle in the city, Matthew explores the local Friendship Centre, a welcoming space full of drumming circles, language classes, freshly baked bannock, and warm community spirit. More than just a building, the Centre becomes a place of connection, tradition, and belonging for Matthew and many others.
Through storytelling and illustrations, this latest book continues Theresa’s legacy of sharing Mi’kmaw culture and values with readers of all ages. Theresa is also the author of titles including Sweetgrass, The Gathering, The Sharing Circle, and contributor to important collections such as the Mi’kmaq Anthology and L’sitkuk.
Raised in L’sitkuk (Bear River) First Nation, where she later served as Chief, Theresa has spent her life advancing Indigenous education and advocacy. In her role at MSVU, she provides strategic leadership on Indigenous affairs and supports initiatives that connect the university with Indigenous communities and students.
Whether you’ve followed Theresa’s writing for years or are just discovering her stories, the launch of The Friendship Centre is a special chance to celebrate Indigenous storytelling and the power of community. We hope to see you there!
