This fall, MSVU welcomed its inaugural class in the university’s new Master of Science in Natural Sciences program (pictured).
This two-year thesis-based program is designed for students with a background in science who want to advance their studies through hands-on research and close collaboration with expert faculty. Students in the program gain the knowledge needed for careers in research, government, healthcare, and environmental fields. The program also prepares graduates for further study at the doctoral level.
Unlike discipline-specific MSc programs, the MSc in Natural Sciences enables students to explore questions that cross traditional scientific boundaries and draw on expertise in biology, chemistry, and psychology. Inter-disciplinary courses also foster learning that spans scientific approaches and fields of study. Research methods training includes fostering an understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in research.
Students in the inaugural class are studying topics from quantum mechanics and pathogenic fungi in Nova Scotia, to overwintering of an agricultural pest in Nova Scotia, muscle and skeleton interactions in development, and more. They’re working alongside some of the best scholars in their fields. MSVU science faculty are leading ground-breaking research across a range of scientific disciplines. Combined with the small program size and the close-knit university community, that means personalized support and meaningful opportunities throughout the graduate experience.
The MSVU MSc in Natural Sciences program was approved by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission this past summer, ensuring a program of high academic standards.
