Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP)

Nova Scotia's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) Act, was introduced in 1994.  The legislation was extended to include "local public bodies" (i.e., universities) in 1999.

Under FOIPOP legislation, universities are required to adopt a policy of accountability, openness and transparency and to provide a right of access to information with limited exceptions. Universities are likewise required to ensure the protection of individuals' personal privacy.  FOIPOP is the balance between ensuring FOI (Freedom of Information) and POP (Protection of Privacy).
