To the MSVU community,

Athletes who prioritize sleep build strength and speed better than those who don’t.

Dough needs time to rest in order to rise, otherwise you’re in for a rubbery finished product.

Also, fruit trees need a dormant winter period in order to bear fruit in the spring and summer.

There is plenty of proof that rest is required in order to be at our best. And at the end of a long and busy year, that rest is more important than ever.

Each of you has worked hard this year and faced your own challenges. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: At MSVU, we have some of the most dedicated students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. As 2025 draws to a close, I hope you’ll take some well-deserved time to rest and recharge. Celebrate the best of the year and leave the worst parts behind – but learn from all of it.

The holidays can be a difficult time. This year in particular, we mourn the loss of lives and erosion of rights driven by hate and intolerance. In response, it’s important that we reaffirm our commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

And while we carry these reflections, we can also look forward to brighter days. The new year will bring new opportunities, and challenges too. Regardless of what comes our way, a good rest will mean we return in 2026 ready to rise to the occasion – fresh and far from rubbery!

Have a restful holiday break,

Joël

PS. In case you missed it, MSVU’s holiday video just dropped and it’s a great one because it spotlights you, the people of MSVU. As always, it was fun to make.
