On November 20, high school students from across Halifax will compete for top prize at Souper FibreMaxxing – a food innovation competition hosted by the Applied Human Nutrition (AHN) department at Mount Saint Vincent University.

When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2026
Where: Multi-Purpose Room, Rosaria Student Centre, 131 Lumpkin Road, Halifax [MSVU campus map]

All are welcome! In fact, the audience is part of this event; attendees will sample student creations and vote for a “people’s choice” award winner. And there will be door prizes.

Earlier this fall, the team in Applied Human Nutrition issued a challenge to local high school students: increase the fibre content of their favourite fall soup and make it tasty!

Armed with evidence-based resources about fibre, five teams of high school students are currently hard at work on their soup innovations. In advance of November 20, each team will submit a detailed recipe with written instructions and a short instructional video. On the day of the competition, MSVU AHN student volunteers will use these instructions to prepare the high school students’ recipes in the campus Food Lab. Each participating team has been given a gift card to cover the purchase of ingredients.

In addition to the “people’s choice” award winner, a panel of judges will select first, second, and third prize winning soups. Judges include: Meredith Hay (MSVU AHN Alumni & food/health content creator), Adegoke Fadare (MLA for Clayton Park West), and Cailin O’Neil (food influencer).

Participating schools include: Cole Harbour District High, Millwood High School, and École Secondaire du Sommet.
