In his session “Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty”, Dr. Lang will explore the pressures that push students toward academic dishonesty, and consider a range of solutions for helping students learn how to do their work with integrity.

When: 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017

Where: Multi-purpose Room, Rosaria Student Centre, Mount Saint Vincent University, 166 Bedford Highway [map]

This session is free; all are welcome.

“When students engage in academically dishonest behaviours, they may be responding to subtle pressures in the learning environment that interfere with deep learning and nudge them toward cheating. If we can gain a better understanding of the reasons for academically dishonest behaviour, we can use that knowledge to improve our course design, teaching practices, and communication with students,” said Dr. Donovan Plumb, Director of Teaching and Learning at the Mount. “This lecture will provide an overview of the various pressures that push students toward academic dishonesty, and consider a range of solutions for helping students learn how to do their work with integrity.”

Dr. James Lang is a Professor of English and the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He is the author of five books, the most recent of which are Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (Jossey-Bass, 2016), and Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (Harvard University Press, 2013). Dr. Lang has conducted workshops on teaching for faculty at more than a hundred colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.
