Louise Arbour, CC, receiving her Honorary Degree in 2001Mount Saint Vincent University extends a hearty congratulations to Louise Arbour, CC, Canada’s next Governor General. Louise received an honorary degree from MSVU in 2001. Outgoing Governor General Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon also holds an honorary degree from MSVU.

Louise is one of the most celebrated jurists of her time, acting as head of a commission to investigate allegations of abuse at the Prison for Women in Kingston, Ontario (resulting in the Arbour Report) and chief prosecutor of war crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and Yugoslavia. Those are just two examples of her exceptional work. She served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and later held the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Some of Louise’s most recent work involved leading an independent review of the Canadian military’s handling of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct, prompting change in how the military deals with such cases.
