Why does punishment feel like the natural answer to gender-based violence? This talk traces how decades of feminist advocacy, public outrage (or lack thereof) and powerful emotions shaped Canada’s turn toward the criminal justice system as the primary response to gender-based violence. Through stories from activism, courtrooms, and policy debates, Dr. Bailey Gerrits explores why this approach feels satisfying even when it fails to stop harm– and what alternatives could move us closer to a world without violence.
