This week, MSVU marked the 10th anniversary of the MountAbility program.
One of only three such programs at universities in Nova Scotia, Mount Ability is an inclusive education pathway program for students who self-identify as having a disability that might otherwise have been a barrier to university studies. It is made possible with funding from the Department of Advanced Education.
Students in the program audit a range of courses and build an individualized portfolio before graduating with a formal Certificate of Completion. Graduating students cross the convocation stage wearing beautifully felted MountAbility stoles created by artist and program graduate Megan Pegg (’23).
To date, MountAbility students have taken more than 70 different courses covering topics such as marketing and entrepreneurship, cultural studies, French, Shakespeare, the history of Indigenous women in Canada, nutrition, psychology, astronomy, global politics, tourism, women and health and MUCH more. Students have also engaged in additional campus activities, for example, volunteering in the Library, showcasing creative works at the MSVU community art show, and participating in student societies.
A big congratulations on this milestone to all MountAbility students and graduates, as well as program coordinator Stephanie Jones and faculty advisor Dr. Cornelia Schneider and Dr. Mary Jane Harkins of the Faculty of Education!
