Brittany Kendell’s passion for French language and culture won her a trip to the Francoforum in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon

On March 20, 2015, the International Day of La Francophonie, Mount French major Brittany Kendell received the award of The Consulate General of France, a prize for students who consistently demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in both French language and Francophone culture. As part of her prize, Brittany will spend a week at the Francoforum, a French language training institute, in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon immersing herself in the French language and culture. brittany and ceilidh with professor juliette valcke“Programs in Modern Languages, such as those offered at the Mount, are very important to our community and students since they encourage diversity in thought, culture, and of course language,” said Brittany. “This major has opened my mind to the world around me, and has helped me develop communication and language skills which will allow me to fully connect to the world around me in the future.”

The prize is awarded to a student enrolled in a Nova Scotia university and is judged by the French consul of the Maritimes based on a written letter expressing interest in the French language. This is the second year in a row that a student from the Mount has won this prize; last year’s winner was Ceilidh Matheson.

Brittany will be paired with a host family, with whom she will stay during her visit. At the Francoforum she will be able to participate in educational workshops to strengthen her French proficiency and visit culturally rich areas within the local region.

“I am greatly looking forward to my trip to the Francoforum in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon because it will offer a chance to fully immerse myself somewhere that is so truly unique and intriguing. There are, of course, also the pâtisseries!” said Brittany.
