With winter upon us, snow and inclement weather are sure to be part of campus life until the warm weather returns. The safety of our students, staff and faculty is our paramount concern at the Mount. In the event of a severe overnight or early morning storm, it is possible that campus operations may be impacted in the morning. In this situation, our ‘storm watch’ team monitors weather conditions to determine whether or not operations can resume.

What we consider

With safety in mind, we look at the following: State of emergency or impending state of emergency; weather conditions (current and forecasted); road conditions; availability of public transportation; ability to access, maintain and use the campus safely; ability of emergency services to access the campus; disadvantages of sending campus visitors back into the weather once they have arrived on campus; and anticipation that conditions may worsen or persist, such as public transportation becoming unavailable or road closures, that would make travel unusually difficult or hazardous.

Communication

Every effort is made to ensure a firm decision is shared with the community prior to 6:00a.m. if the decision is taking place before the start of normal working hours, or before 3:30p.m. if it’s during the day. If there is a campus impact, you will hear about it through the following channels:

  • University website (msvu.ca)
  • University’s official social media Facebook and Twitter accounts
  • Local radio and television stations (Note: A delay may occur between the time of notification and the time of broadcast. As we provide the updates, the best source of information is the website and/or social media.)

Class Cancellations

In some circumstances, where it is deemed safe to remain open, it may be decided to cancel some or all classes. For information about the status of the University and classes during a snowstorm, you can visit the class cancellation page, or call the class cancellation line at 457-6566.

  • There may be circumstances when an individual instructor finds it impossible to get in to conduct a scheduled class. The instructor will make every effort to inform students of this cancellation.
  • Distance classes, in many cases, will proceed as scheduled, providing the technology is functioning. Students are advised to check Moodle for more information.
  • If a final examination is scheduled during a cancellation, it will be rescheduled through the University’s Registrar’s office.
