Why a crow?
We don’t think it’s a coincidence that the crow, one of the most intelligent species of birds, calls Mount Saint Vincent University their home.
For decades, the crows of HRM (an estimated 3,000-8,000 of them) have flocked to the Mount campus every evening at dusk to roost in the many beautiful trees on campus. This is a fascinating phenomenon for which the Mount has become known.
Crows are incredibly smart, just like Mount community members. They’re excellent communicators – they actually develop their own dialects, differentiating them from crows in other areas – and are extremely social. They understand the value of community, and are known to work together to hunt, play and protect the roost. To learn more fascinating facts about crows, we recommend this great documentary.
Adding to the roost
Many members of the Mount community recognize that our crows are a unique identifier for the University – one that should be embraced. Our Student’s Union have the Crow’s Nest (24-hour student computer lounge), the Crow n’ Go (campus convenience store), and feature crows on much of their merchandise; the Mount’s Aboriginal Student Centre logo features a crow in flight; and Sully the Sustainable Crow can still be found on stickers near light switches around campus, encouraging people to turn off the lights when leaving. Our new mascot is another addition to the roost!
