 Psychology Department Profile


BA or BSC with Psychology major in a 20 unit program. The Psychology core program is required for any major in Psychology. It consists of 1 unit of Mathematics - Introduction to Probability and Statistics, 3 1/2 units of Psychology from a specified list of courses, and 1 unit selected from each of the following core areas: Experimental. Clinical/Applied. Social/Personality .

 

BA or BSC Honours degree ( 20 units) requires an Honours thesis and seminar and courses in physiological psychology and contemporary research problems.

 

The undergraduate Psychology degree is required for admission to the Masters of Arts in School Psychology Program.

Clientele:
Materials acquired under the Psychology allocation are also used by faculty and students in Child and Youth Study, Sociology, Biology, Education, Women's Studies, Gerontology, Business, and Public Relations.


Responsibility:
Materials are selected by Psychology faculty and librarians. Librarians also select specialized dictionaries and glossaries, bibliographies, inventories of tests and guides to test reviews, journal article indexes.


Scope:
English language currently published materials are primarily selected. Videotapes, dvds, and software packages may be ordered and will be catalogued for Novanet.  The ERIC documents collection on microfiche and online from 1996 to the present, is a valuable resource in educational and child psychology, and educational testing and measurement. Among the relevant databases are PsycARTICLES ( full-text APA and related journals) and PsycINFO, an online indexing and abstracting service to Psychology articles and book chapters. Textbooks are not normally acquired unless they are more recent editions of titles currently on our shelf.


Exclusions:
Unpublished dissertations and manuscripts although the University Archives does collect copies of Honours theses completed at the Mount.
Popular works without academic interest. Lab manuals, workbooks, and consumables. Collections of journal article reprints. Newsletters unless they have significant research content and are indexed. The following sections of the Psychology classification are not selected under the Psychology allocation: BF 839.8 - BF 940 Phrenology, Graphology, Palmistry; BF 1001 - BF 1389 Parapsychology; BF 1404 - 1999 Occult Sciences.
