Modern Languages Department and Linguistics Program Profiles


Program:


BA with a French major in a 20 unit program. "Majors in French normally take a minor in English, German, Spanish, or Linguistics." ( MSVU Calendar)

BA Honours in French ( 20 units) includes an honours essay.

Certificate of Proficiency in French "offers students who are not specializing in French an opportunity to attain a high level of oral and written competence." Upon acceptance to the course, students are required to take specified degree courses equal to 3 units and sit for a comprehensive examination in the skills of listening comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension, and writing.

 

BA with a minor in Spanish. A joint honours degree (20 units) is offered with Dalhousie.

 

BA with a minor or elective in German.


The Halifax Interuniversity Program in Linguistics is offered by MSVU, Dalhousie, and Saint Mary's with the degree granted by the student's home university.
BA with a major (20 units), honours, or minor in Linguistics. Faculty from Modern Languages, Political Studies,Psychology and Sociology & Anthropology participate as instructors in this interdisciplinary program.

Note: European, Latin American, Asian, and African authors who write in English or whose works are available in English translation may be selected by the English Department faculty.


Clientele:
Materials selected for students in Modern Languages are also used by faculty and students in English, Canadian Studies, Speech and Drama, Public Relations, Education, Political Studies, History, and Philosophy.


Responsibility:
Materials are selected by librarians and faculty teaching courses in modern languages and linguistics. Librarians also purchase glossaries, dictionaries and related reference tools.


Scope:
Current editions of works on French, Spanish and German language and literature may be acquired, although some retrospective selection may be necessary. Audio-visual materials may be ordered as required, and will be fully catalogued for Novanet.  Any works on Canadian and French Canadian (including Acadian French) culture, language and the politics of language, and literature are welcome additions to our collection, even if duplicated elsewhere in Novanet. The Gerritsen Collection on microfiche is rich in French and German monographs by and about women from the Renaissance to the 1920s.


Exclusions:
Workbooks and other consumables. Language lab manuals. Pocket editions of dictionaries and phrase books. Popular works without academic interest. Generally, works on the more obscure language groups are not ordered e.g. Finno-Ugrian , Basque ( PH class), Indo-Iranian, Armenian, Georgian (PK class).
