Family Studies & Gerontology Department Profile

 

Program:
Bachelor of Applied Arts - Family Studies & Gerontology (BAA FS&G) requires 21 units after Grade XII, including 2 supervised practica. The Gerontology option focuses on issues related to aging. The Family Studies option encompasses a study of individuals and families across the life course.

 

Certificate in Gerontology for those with at least 5 units of university level courses who undertake an additional 6 units of study in Gerontology. Some Family Studies & Gerontology courses are cross listed under Sociology / Anthropology, Psychology, Women Studies, and Religious Studies, Tourism & Hospitality Management, Peace & Conflict Studies.

Master of Arts in Family Studies & Gerontology (MA FS&G) requires 5 units including a 1 unit thesis.

Family Studies & Gerontology materials are used by students and faculty in Sociology, Psychology, Child & Youth Study, Applied Human Nutrition, Women's Studies, Religious Studies, Education, Political Studies, Peace & Conflict Studies, and Public Policy Studies.

Responsibility:
Materials are selected by Family Studies & Gerontology faculty and librarians.

Scope:
Most materials selected in the field of Gerontology are current English language publications which emphasize social gerontology rather than geriatrics. Materials relating to the delivery of services to families and the aged generally have a Canadian focus. Journals are an important resource. Donations of recently published textbooks , Canadian imprints , materials not already held in a Novanet collection ,or which are newer editions of works currently in our collection, are accepted.

Exclusions:
Unpublished dissertations, manuscripts, popular works without academic interest, collections of journal article reprints, work books and other consumables. Newsletters are not retained beyond the current year.
