  Applied Human Nutrition Department Profile

Program:
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition ( BscAHN) is a 4 year program which prepares students for a wide choice of careers in nutrition and for the professional practice of dietetics.


The BScAHN in Dietetics (20 units) plus the Integrated Internship Education Program (20 + 3 units) at MSVU meets the accreditation guidelines of Dieticians of Canada (DC). The Dietetics Program requires courses in Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Business.


The Nutrition Program (20 units) requires courses in Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
The BScAHN Honours degree requires 20 units plus the honours thesis.


Master of Science in Applied Human Nutrition and  Master of Applied Human Nutrition (5 units or 4 units + thesis) emphasize issues related to community nutrition.

Clientele:
Materials in Applied Human Nutrition are also used by faculty and students in Sociology, Tourism and Hospitality, Biology, Child and Youth Study, Family Studies & Gerontology, Chemistry, Business, Economics, Women's Studies, Psychology, and Education.


Responsibility:
Materials are selected by librarians and faculty in Applied Human Nutrition. In addition, librarians use the Reference allocation to select handbooks, specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias, bibliographies, indexes. Librarians use the checklists issued by the depository services to select publications issued by the federal and provincial Departments of Health, the Environment, and Agriculture, and the reports on social trends and demographics published by Statistics Canada.


Scope:
Most monograph selections are made from currently published English language resources. Print and electronic Journals are very important; the Mount library maintains a collection of  journals in nutrition, dietetics, food science, and hospitality, a small number of which are unique within Novanet collections. Software packages, videos and dvds, and multi-media kits will be ordered as required, and will be fully catalogued for Novanet.  Donations of recently published textbooks are accepted. Monographs pertaining to Canadian social conditions in general and family life in particular are useful additions to our collection if current and not duplicated elsewhere in Novanet.


Exclusions:
Unpublished dissertations, manuscripts. The University Archives does welcome the donation of research reports and theses from the Masters level programs in Human Ecology / Applied Human Nutrition at the Mount. Collections of journal article reprints, lab manuals, workbooks and other consumables, popular works without academic interest. Newsletters are discarded after one year, unless they are indexed .
