Matthias Mueller – Head Coach, Cross Country

As the 2023-24 season comes to an end, Coach Matthias Mueller has announced this will be his final season as head coach of the Mount Mystics cross-country program.

Mueller joined the program in 2017-18 alongside Alex MacEachern with a focus on re-building a program that had been on hiatus for several years. He came to the Mystics after serving as an assistant coach with the Dalhousie Tigers cross country and track and field programs as well as the HaliFast Athletics Club.

As Mueller reflected on his time spent as a Mystic, he expressed gratitude and appreciation. “I would like to thank all of the athletes who gave me the privilege of aiding their training and racing journeys during my time at MSVU. It’s not an easy thing to juggle academics and athletics, so without the hard work and contributing efforts of every athlete who ran with our team, we would not have been able to achieve any of our successes. Though I am looking forward to a new chapter as a dad, I will greatly miss coaching so many bright young individuals, along with the greater MSVU family as a whole.”

The Mystics enjoyed many successes in his seven years at the helm, including three ACAA women’s team bronze medals, and an ACAA women’s championship title in 2019-20 – their first since the 2008-09 season. That same year, Mystics runner Grace Anderson was named the ACAA runner of the year, and Mueller was named ACAA coach of the year. In the 2021-22 season, he coached Mitchell Firth to an ACAA individual bronze medal, and in 2022-23 the women’s team took home the ACAA bronze medal.

“We’re incredibly grateful for what Matthias has done for our cross country program during his tenure here at Mount Saint Vincent University,” says Angela Barrett-Jewers, director of athletics and recreation. “We’re sad to see him leave and wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”

The search for a new cross-country coach will begin this spring.
