What is Women’s Studies?
Women’s Studies is about social justice, equity, anti-oppression, and complicated and sometimes-conflicting identity politics. It is about questioning how things came to be, questioning dominant meta-narratives of history, and questioning norms. Drawing attention to the voices and experiences of those who are often excluded. Classes can range from very theoretical to classes with real-world applications. Women’s Studies is not just about women or gender, but about various complex and often intersecting identities and thus experiences – failing to recognize this, that women are not a homogenous group, was one of the biggest flaws of the early women’s movement.
