While some countries are partially opening their borders at this time, the Canadian government continues to advise Canada-based travelers against non-essential travel outside of the country.
The following update shares information regarding University-related travel. With regards to personal travel, you are encouraged to review the travel advisories issued by the Canadian government to ensure your safety. All travelers should be aware of possible self-isolation requirements upon return/entry to Canada. As well, most insurers are not providing COVID-19 related coverage for non-essential travel outside Canada – be sure to check in advance.
Your safety is our priority!
To ensure the well-being of both outbound and inbound students, MSVU has suspended the Student Exchange Program for the fall semester. A decision about student exchange during the winter 2021 semester will be made soon.
Support for international students
At this time, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (or IRCC) is permitting only those students with study permits approved prior to March 18, 2020 to travel to Canada for fall studies. We will continue to work with our partners and share updates as they become available.
Our International Education Centre has prepared a COVID-19: International FAQ that answers questions about travelling to Canada or home, Immigration permits, Working in Canada, and understanding taxes and social insurance numbers.
Faculty and Staff
University-related travel (not research related)
All work-related travel (not including research travel) outside of Canada is suspended until further notice. Essential work-related travel within Canada by eligible employee plan members, and for which no remote alternative exists, is now covered by our insurance partner SSQ (intranet link), so can proceed with departmental approval.
Essential research-related travel for which there is no remote alternative (including field work) can proceed with insurance coverage in place. Such travel covered under MSVU’s emergency medical travel insurance plan (for eligible faculty and staff) requires pre-approval by our provider, SSQ. Please consult with your Dean and then contact Human Resources for assistance – email@example.com.
