Our Community
Radio, also known as Social Economy (SE) Radio, took place
in Fredericton, New Brunswick on 97.9 FM (local dial -
CHSR). It was a place for community members to drop in, tune
in and chime in! It was also a place for researchers to drop
by, sharing their experiences within the social economy on
the air. Check out this poster advertising the event for a
better idea:

All
community members and researchers were welcome on there air,
but
here are the people who made it happen and who spent
significant amounts of time on air:
Dr. Ivan
Emke - Ivan is the Vice-Principal (Research), Memorial
University of Newfoundland-Sir Wilfred Grenfell College
campus. He has been exploring the idea of Community-Based
Radio as a communication tool for groups in the social
economy. This exploration has led him and his team to small
communities across Atlantic Canada where live broadcasts
happen, just like the one that took place in Fredericton. If
you would like to contact Ivan: iemke@swgc.mun.ca
Fred
Campbell - is a communicator, educator and rural
development facilitator who has worked out of Atlantic
Canada since 1979. Fred has extensive experience in
communications including; working as a newspaper reporter
-photographer and editor, a journalism college program
coordinator and a communications program developer for
Memorial University's rural extension service. Over the
years, Fred has developed and coordinated a series of
multi-community, multi-stakeholder rural development
projects and he has produced a wide variety of videos,
locally and internationally. He founded
Ryakuga, a development
support grassroots communications organization. This
information about Fred was pulled from
Ryakuga : check out
the site!
Charlene
Croft - is an independent facilitator, researcher
and consultant with an educational background in sociology
(MSVU) and virtual anthropology. Specializing in social
media, survey design and analysis and short-term project
management, Charlene has been used by non-profit
organizations like the Canadian Centre for Policy
Alternatives, The North End Community Health Centre and The
Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia for various
projects and contracts. She has also carried out contracts
in the private sector with Kisserup International Trade
Roots, and is currently an on-call contractor for Maverick
Communications. Charlene coordinated online accounts and
live webcasting during the week. She was also on the ground
doing interviews.
Eva Emke -
Eva is Ivan's talented 14 year old daughter. She was an
on the ground reporter, an editor and, at times, she ran the
control board and music: what a chameleon! Through Eva, we
saw that community members of all ages improve community
radio!
Melissa
Russwurm - Since August 2010, Melissa has been the
Communications Assistant for the Social Economy and
Sustainability Research Network (SESRN) Atlantic Node
office. Melissa worked with the community radio broadcast,
alongside other members of SESRN. She was a flexible, roving
reporter, who specifically enjoyed walking through the
Charlotte Street Arts Centre with the live mic, capturing
moments as they happened in the lively centre.
Noreen
Millar - MA (Sociology), has been the Coordinator of the
Social Economy Network’s “Atlantic Node” since 2006. In this
role, Noreen has had regular interactions with all of the
partners in the Atlantic Network and with the CSE Hub and
other regional nodes in the SSHRC-funded social economy
project across Canada. Noreen interviewed many SESRN
partners on air.
Noreen authored a book entitled "Mapping the Social Economy
of Atlantic Canada: Profiles of Community Partners in the
Social Economy Network, 2005-2010." This book and a book by
David Bent, "Determined to Prosper: The Story of Sussex
Co-op, the Oldest Agricultural Society in the World" ( a
"Measuring the Co-operative Difference Research Network"
project) was launched live on Community Radio!
