What to Expect from Counselling Services

Banner Counselling What to Expect
Counselling Services is committed to providing a range of services intended to help students develop improved coping skills in order to address emotional, interpersonal, and academic concerns. We provide individual, and couples, counselling and all of these services are free to registered Mount students. Counselling Services offers primarily short-term counselling, but we do provide referrals to the community when students could benefit from longer term services.

All students go through the same process at their first appointment at Counselling Services. When you arrive for your first appointment you will fill out an "intake form", and then meet with the counsellor to discuss your concerns and expectations from the counselling process.

Your first appointment will provide you with an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counsellor about your immediate concerns. Your counsellor will talk with you about some of the reasons you scheduled the appointment and will evaluate what services or resources will be most helpful for you. Some students find that talking with a counsellor once is sufficient to resolve the immediate concern. If further services would be beneficial, these will be discussed and a recommendation will be made by a counsellor.
