Stress Management

Stress is your body’s reaction to the demands that are placed on it. It occurs when we feel that we can’t cope with what our lives demand from us. University can be a very stressful time for many people.
Believe it or not, a moderate level of stress can actually be good for you. It can pump you up and increase your attention level. People perform at an optimum level when stress is moderate. However, too much stress doesn’t have the same effect.

Everyone is bound to feel stressed out sometimes. You can’t really escape stress, but there are some things you can do to reduce it and better manage it:

1. Stay healthyIronically, in times of stress we neglect the things we need to do to help us properly manage stress. No matter what’s going on around you, your first priority should be to take care of your body. You need to eat nutritious food and get lots of sleep. You should avoid drugs, alcohol and too much caffeine. Exercise keeps your body healthy and also gives you an outlet for your stress.

2. Become aware of your stressorsRecognize the situations and people who are stressing you out so you can avoid them if possible. You may be making yourself susceptible to unnecessary stress.

3. Learn time management

Time management is a great way to reduce stress. It keeps you organized and ensures that you get everything done on time. For more information on time management, click here.

4. Enjoy fun activitiesYou need to allow yourself some time for leisure activities. Yes, it’s important that you get your work done, but you also have to take breaks. A night out with your friends or a trip to the movies may help you get back on track.

5. Practice acceptanceSometimes you have to accept the things that can’t be changed. Learn to ignore what is beyond your control and be positive about things you can control. If there’s nothing you can do about whatever is causing you stress, try to put it out of your mind and move forward.

6. Say noIt’s good to realize you have limits. Sometimes you have to say no to certain requests so you don’t increase your stress level. At times this may be tough to do, but most people will understand.

7. Relax! Now and then you need to sit back and relax. Slow deep breathing may help you calm down. Listen to music, watch TV or take a hot shower or bath. Relaxing can help you put things in perspective.

8. Get helpTalking to friends or family members may also help put things in perspective. In some cases you may need to speak with a counsellor. If stress is a problem for you, make an appointment to speak to a professional. The Mount offers free counselling services to its students, and you can make an appointment by calling (902) 457-6567.
