Ensuring Future Academic Success

UNIV 0001: Student Success CourseThe Student Success Course is a mandatory, non-credit course for students placed on academic probation.  This course was designed to help students gain the academic skills necessary for university success.  A joint initiative of the Department of Student Affairs and the Office of the Deans, the Student Success Course was introduced in 1999 in response to increasing numbers of students at risk for dismissal from the university due to a newly implemented Academic Probation/Dismissal policy.

Course Goals 

The main goals of the Student Success Course are:

  • to discover individual academic strengths and weaknesses
  • to discover and enhance motivation for learning
  • to develop and/or enhance effective study skills
  • to develop and/or enhance personal development skills necessary for academic success

Course Content/Delivery

To meet the goals of the course, the following topics are included:

  • Motivation and commitment
  • Self assessment of current study skills and learning styles
  • Career assessment and planning
  • Time management and anti-procrastination
  • Reading textbooks effectively
  • Critical thinking/critical reading
  • Effective note-taking
  • Writing papers
  • Public speaking
  • Preparing for exams, taking exams, and dealing with exam anxiety
  • Stress management
  • The delivery of the course includes a combination of self-assessment, group and individual exercises, lectures, and group discussions.  Class size is limited to 20 students in an effort to provide as much individual attention to students as possible.
