Understanding Academic Jeopardy
The Dean's Office assesses all students' academic standing each year at the end of May. Academic standing is based on your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which is the average grades earned in all of your courses. Students with a CGPA between 1.0 - 1.699 (inclusive) who have attempted at least 3.0 units will be placed on academic probation until the next assessment period. Students who have achieved CGPA less than 1.0 who have attempted at least 3.0 units will be dismissed for a 12-month period.
Important Terms and Policies:
Academic AlertAcademic Alert is an early warning that a student may be in academic jeopardy if their grades do not improve. Students who achieve a Term GPA (TGPA) below 1.7 in their Fall semester will receive an Academic Alert letter. Students will be asked to meet with their Academic Advisor.
Academic Probation (AP)
If a student achieves a cumulative GPA between 1.0 and 1.699 who have attempted at least 3.0 units from September to April, they will be put on Academic Probation. While on AP, students:
- Are permitted to take a maximum of 4 courses per semester.
- Must register for and pass UNIV 0001 (the Student Success Course).
- Are not permitted to participate in a co-op work term or practicum.
- Must maintain a Term GPA of 1.7 or higher to avoid academic dismissal.
- Are monitored by the Academic Advisor throughout the year.
Academic Dismissal
Students will be dismissed for a 12-month period if:
- They have attempted at least 3.0 units and achieved a CGPA less than 1.0.
- They are currently on AP and achieved a Term GPA less than 1.7.
Students who are academically dismissed for a second time will be dismissed for two years.
Re-admission
Students who have been dismissed and have been away for the 12-month period must meet with the Student Academic Advisor prior to re-admission. Students who are re-admitted will return on academic probation and special conditions may apply.
Graduation Requirements
Students will not be permitted to graduate while on academic probation. In addition, students must meet specific departmental GPA requirements for graduation.
