Bodies in Translation: Age and Creativity

The Nova Scotia Centre on Aging is pleased to present an Art Exhibition in partnership with Bodies in Translation and the MSVU Art Gallery. This exhibition features work that challenges assumptions about aging and explores the lived experience of aging as it relates to identity, culture, embodiment, sexuality and disability.

Join us on Sunday, October 1, 2017 for a Reception to celebrate the Art Exhibition in conjunction with National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Persons. 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm, MSVU Art Gallery. Everyone welcome.

The Exhibition will run September 9 - November 12, 2017 at the Art Gallery, Mount Saint Vincent University. The MSVU Art Gallery is located on the MSVU Campus at 166 Bedford Hwy, Seton Academic Centre (main floor and second floor room 209) Halifax, NS, Canada. Creatively Engaging: Disability Arts, Aesthetics, and Accessibility

Co-curator Eliza Chandler will engage in a public dialogue centring on disability arts and its role in the disability rights and justice movements, the emergence of disability aesthetics and practices of accessible curation.

Age and Creativity: Conversation with the artists and curators

Saturday 23 September at 2-4pm

Artists Cecil Day and George Steeves will be joined by curators Ingrid Jenkner and Eliza Chandler in conversation about their work, how it responds to the exhibition theme and how the challenge to make their art accessible changed, or even enhanced, their work. The panel discussion will be preceded by a performance by artist Michael Fernandes at 1:30pm

Reception to Celebrate International Day of the Older Person

Sunday 1 October at 2-4pm

Join us for a Reception on October 1, 2017 as we recognize the contributions of older adults to our families, communities and society. Special performance by El Jones, Nancy’s Chair in Women‘s Studies and former Halifax Poet Laureate.The reception also celebrates the art exhibition, Bodies in Translation: Age and Creativity which features work by Maritime-based artists. These artists’ work animates the intersection between the aging and the artistic processes and help to raise awareness around the social and cultural contributions of older adults to our communities. The the exhibition includes accessible supports suitable for a range of abilities, and sign language interpretation is available during the reception.

Multi-perspective panel: How can art and art exhibitions challenge assumptions about aging?

NSCA is pleased to be hosting a multi-perspective panel. Join us on October 30 as panelists offer insights into how art and exhibitions can support public awareness of the social and cultural contributions older adults make to our communities. Panelists include:
