The Atlantic Research Centre for Family-Work Issues (FWI Centre), funded through a Canadian Foundation for Innovation grant to Dr. Áine Humble, is a research and training centre that focuses on work and family life issues, examining the intersection between employment and home life and the division of labour within homes. Research that takes place within this centre (a) is guided by a gender perspective, which explores how gender is constructed at a number of different levels (i.e., individual, interactional, structural), and (b) focuses on family diversity and contextual factors.
The centre is located in the MSVU Research House (see right side of map [pdf] for location of the Research House).
The centre houses equipment set up to conduct large survey research (computer-assisted telephone interviewing and web surveys, using WinCATI 4.2 Mixed Mode software) and conduct in-depth interviewing (e.g., digital voice recorders and video recorders). Additional software is available for analysis of both quantitative (SPSS) and qualitative data (MAXQDA 2007, Atlas.ti 5.6, and NVivo8).
Research grants provide research assistant opportunities for students who are interested in exploring family-work issues such as women's retirement, division of labour in cohabiting relationships, and caregiving issues.
