Supplemental information for "Wedding Work" project (Áine Humble)

Below are four links to pages providing supplemental information for my report on "Wedding Work" , which describes my data analysis for a research study on wedding preparation in remarried couples. This report is part of a web-based supplement to Lyn Richards' (2009) book, Handling Qualitative Data (2nd ed.).

Please note: The information on these pages will only make sense if you have read my original report, which is available at Sage publications. Please also visit Sage's Methodspace. You may also want to look at the other nine reports of other people's research, also available at the same website.

The Data

On this page I have posted three pdf documents:

    (a) the interview guide

    (b) the transcription guide

    (c) letter to participants for transcription review

I also have an interesting table that shows an analysis of the interviews with brides and grooms from each couple in terms of the length of interviews, how many coded segments were in each interview, and whether or not this differed based on gender and the order in which respondents were interviewed (i.e., was the bride interviewed first or second?).

Finally, there are two matrices here, showing patterns between respondents' first and most recent weddings. These matrices are my preferred alternative to the original way in which I presented this information in matrix form.

ScreenshotsA number of screenshots are included here, to help readers understand my management system and MAXQDA, the qualitative software program that I used for analysis.

Screenshots are of:

    (a) a Windows folder showing my data management system,

    (b) MAXQDA's interface,

    (c) MAXQDA's Attributes table, and

    (d) MAXQDA's Code Matrix Browser.

TextPortraitsTextPortraits are a very interesting visual tool available in MAXQDA (the 2007 version, which is the most recent version). On this page, I show various examples of TextPortraits, descriptions of how to interpret them, a caution about use, and one picture showing how I compared various TextPortraits with each other (old fashioned- using the floor!).
