Patricia Monaghan

Background

Patricia Monaghan has been in the field of early childhood education for over 20 years.  She was the Assistant Director and Preschool Outreach Program Coordinator for the Progress Centre for Early Intervention, a resource centre supporting families of young children, birth to school entry, with special needs.  Patricia was a recipient of the 2006 Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education for her work supporting families of young children with special needs and for her work developing a unique bilingual Mandarin/English child care program in Halifax.  She is also the co-author of Building Blocks: Strategies for Inclusion, a book and facilitated training program supporting the inclusion of young children with special needs in child care programs.  This program has been implemented across Nova Scotia, as well as in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Patricia holds a Bachelor of Child Study Degree in Education from Mount Saint Vincent University and a Master Degree in Special Education from the University of Toronto (OISE).  She has taught part-time at Mount Saint Vincent University and is currently on a full-time term contract with the Department of Child and Youth Study.  Patricia's research interests lie in early intervention, inclusion in early child care and education settings, family-centred proctice, attachment in toddler adoption and affirming culture in early childhood programs.
