Mature StudentsMature Learners

Learning is a lifelong experience. If your educational journey is about to begin, and you have been out of school for some time, you are considered a mature learner. Mature learners are admitted on a case-by-case basis. Interested students should apply for admission, including a statement of educational goals, a resume, transcripts from previous study, and any additional documentation of professional training or experience. Both volunteer and paid employment skills should be included. An interview will be arranged with an academic advisor prior to admission to discuss your educational possibilities. For more information on admission for mature learners, refer to Admission procedures for MSVU.

Transferring Credit from Previous Study or Work Experience

Students who have completed similar courses at other universities or community college may qualify for transfer credit. Students should request transfer credit by providing transcripts and detailed course outlines from their previous institution for faculty assessment.

Students who have considerable work experience in the field and/or relevant professional credentials, can complete a portfolio for evaluation. This procedure, called Portfolio Learning Assessment (PLA), requires students to complete a portfolio providing proof of their background through employers' letters, diplomas, certificates, and/or transcripts. The material in the portfolio must be clearly linked to the courses that the student feels are the equivalent of his/her background. The portfolio is submitted to the Registrar's Office for assessment by faculty.

Students can also challenge for course credit if they cannot transfer credit, or if they cannot provide a portfolio for assessment. Challenges usually involve completing course assignments and examinations.

Students can transfer in a maximum of 50% of the credits required for any credential: certificate, diploma, or degree. By combining portfolio assessment, transfer credit, and challenge for credit, a maximum of 75% of a credential may be obtained. Students who have considerable background through work experience and/or coursework are urged to discuss their particular situation with a faculty member prior to registering for classes. For more information on transfer courses from previous study please see Admission Requirements.
