The first program of its kind in Eastern Canada 

Welcome to the newest online executive certificate program for real estate professionals in Atlantic Canada, presented by Mount Saint Vincent University, Homburg Institute and NSCC. This innovative program is the first of its kind in Eastern Canada, and is designed to impart a thorough understanding of the real estate development process and real estate finance, providing participants the ability to enhance and strengthen their expertise, professional practice and business success.

  • The program has been developed with flexibility in mind for busy working professionals. Individuals moving into the field of commercial real estate, aspiring developers and real estate professionals seeking to broaden their knowledge of the field, will benefit from this new program. Program delivery will include a combination of in-person meetings in Halifax, online lectures and collaboration, and real-time web conferencing.
  • Five Program Modules will be delivered over the course, ranging from private real estate investment to financing, development, law and negotiation. See below for full description.

Program outline

Program faculty and instructors include local, national and international real estate practitioners and academics chosen for their experience and expertise. The program consists of five modules and the program delivery will include a combination of in-person meetings in Halifax, online lectures and collaboration, and real-time web conferencing. The modules include:

  1. Fundamentals of Private Real Estate Investment - basic concepts necessary to understand the fundamentals of real estate investment, including the challenges and opportunities of development in Atlantic Canada.
  2. Project Financing and Financial Management - aspects of finance that are directly relevant to commercial real estate, such as REITs, sale-leaseback, and advanced real estate investment analysis; preparation for the management of project scope, budgets, and the ability to identify and mitigate risks.
  3. Construction Management - building understanding of the principles and practices essential to managing projects effectively.
  4. Law and Strategic Negotiation - the fundamental concepts of real estate law, a basic understanding of real estate law in Atlantic Canada, and development of negotiation skills through case studies.  
  5. Capstone Project - proposal and preparation of a complete development project plan.
