SOAN 2265: Sociology of Women

Attention Women's Studies students!

This course is listed as a Women-Emphasis course and may be counted towards a BA in Women's Studies.

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicyle"                                                                     - Irina Dunn
What does it mean to be a woman?

More than just a collection of molecules and chromosomes, woman represents a rich tapestry of social meanings.  From Sojourner Truth’s passionate question “Ain’t I a Woman” to DeBeauvoir’s famous quote “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman” we have long struggled with what it means to be (or become) and be counted as a woman

Using this as our frame of reference, this class will explore women as both a social product and social producers. Specifically, we will explore questions such as:

  • Women and race/ethnicity/nationality
  • Social class distinctions
  • Intimacies and Sexualities
  • Politics, Law and Social Control
  • The possibilities of social change

How will students be evaluated in this course?

  • Mid-term Exam (take home format)
  • Journal writing/reflection papers
  • Women 2.0 assignment (create a blog, webpage, mashup, video, artwork, etc)
  • Organize a community forum/discussion (topic selected by the students)
  • Civic Engagement: Organizing a campus clothing drive for “Dress for Success”

No Final Exam scheduled for this class.
