POLS 3309

SELECTED TOPICS IN POLITICAL STUDIES – WINTER TERM 2010

WITH REGINALD C. STUART

 This seminar-style course will begin with a thorough discussion of :

Michael Hart, From Pride to Influence: Towards a new Canadian Foreign Policy(2008)

From there we will explore the principal themes and objectives of the current Canadian government in external, affairs, such as Arctic sovereignty, national and global Security, trade, human rights, international organizations. 

After round-table discussions in class, each student will refine their topic in the role of a special advisor to a senior officer in DFAIT.  The final report will advise (through the instructor) the Minister of DFAIT on what policy to follow in each particular case.

POLS 3310 – Managing Public Policy

Interested in discussing…

·         public policy development

·         dealing with social, economic and political factors in managing public policy

·         business-government relations

·         policy communities and lobbying

 

Course Description:

This “hands-on” course is designed to provide opportunities for students to further their skills in analyzing issues, framing possible recommendations, exploring implementation options, and presenting findings in written and oral form.

 

Credit: .5 units

Prerequisites: one prior unit in political studies or permission of the instructor

Day/Time: Tuesday from 7:05pm to 9:35pm
