The study of History at the Mount involves what the past means and can mean for you. Our courses cover a wide range of subjects in North American, European, World and women’s history. They will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the past, of change and continuity in the evolution of human societies and cultures, and of our complex global present. You will learn about your own history and be exposed to others’ histories.

History courses will also help you develop skills in reading, project planning, research, writing, and speaking that will serve you well no matter what your career goals. Small classes encourage personal interaction and discussion as well as easy access to your instructors, who are all closely engaged in teaching and their research.

The skills and knowledge you will gain as a History student will give you the flexibility and adaptability required in today’s rapidly changing job-market. History graduates find careers in journalism, law, teaching at all levels, libraries and information management, archival administration, museums and public history, tourism, publishing and editing, social activism, government service, business and industry, in fact any future you want to follow.

        
You may choose to do a major, a combined major, a minor, a concentration or an honours degree in History. A major (20 units) requires the completion of 8 units of history, while the combined major consists of 6 units of history and 6 units of your other combined major. The minor requires 3 units of history, and the concentration, taken as part of a B.A.-General Studies (15 units), requires 4. The honours degree (20 units) gives students the opportunity to study history in more depth by completing 10 units of history and writing a thesis on a historical topic of their choice.

You may also take history courses as electives. All our 1000- and 2000-level courses are open to all students and have no prerequisites.
